Mt. Fuji & the Fuji Five Lakes: A 3-Day Itinerary
The best of Mt Fuji in 3 days — Chureito Pagoda, Lake Kawaguchi reflections and the best viewpoints, with exact timing for clear-Fuji shots, transport, food and where to stay.
Mt. Fuji is shy. It hides in cloud more often than not, which is exactly why a quick day trip so often disappoints. Give it three days based at the Fuji Five Lakes (Fujigoko) and you dramatically improve your odds of that perfect, snow-capped, mirror-reflected shot — plus time to enjoy the lakeside, shrines and onsen beneath it. This guide is built around catching Fuji at its clearest.
Is this route right for you?
Perfect if you want a proper crack at photographing Fuji, or a restorative lakeside-and-onsen add-on to a Tokyo trip. A great 3-day extension to the Golden Route.
At a glance
- Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
- Best season: Cold months (Nov–Feb) for clearest air and snow cap; dawn is best year-round
- Pace: Relaxed
- Ideal for: Photographers, nature lovers, couples
- Base: Kawaguchiko (~2h from Tokyo)
Rough daily budget (per person)
| Style | Per day |
|---|---|
| Budget | £75–105 / $95–135 |
| Mid-range | £130–200 / $165–255 |
| Comfortable | £280+ / $360+ |
Getting around: do you need a car?
Public transport works well; a car is optional. Direct buses from Shinjuku reach Kawaguchiko, and local buses (the Fuji retro buses) loop the lakes and viewpoints. A rental car only helps if you want total freedom to dart to a viewpoint the moment the cloud lifts at dawn — nice for keen photographers, unnecessary for everyone else.

When can you actually see Fuji?
- Best odds: dawn and dusk in the cold, dry months. Fuji often clouds over by mid-morning.
- Check the forecast the night before (cloud cover, wind). If the morning is clear, shoot first, sightsee later.
- Winter gives the iconic snow cap; summer (when it's climbable) is often hazy and bare.
Route map
A lakeside base with viewpoints around it: Kawaguchiko (base) → Chureito Pagoda → Oshino Hakkai → Lakes Saiko & Motosu.
Day 1 — Arrive & the north shore
Travel from Tokyo and settle by Lake Kawaguchi.
- Ōishi Park on the north shore — seasonal flower foreground with Fuji behind.
- The Kawaguchiko Tenjōyama ropeway for an elevated panorama.
🍜 Eat: hōtō — thick, flat noodles in a hearty miso-pumpkin stew, the Fuji region's soul food.
📷 Photo spot: Fuji reflected ("Sakasa-Fuji") in still Lake Kawaguchi from the north shore at dawn — wind-free mornings only.

Where you sleep: 2 nights Kawaguchiko, ideally a Fuji-view or onsen room. Find a Fuji-view stay →
Day 2 — Chureito Pagoda & the villages
- Sunrise: the Chureito Pagoda (Arakurayama Sengen Park) — the five-storey pagoda with Fuji behind, framed by blossom in spring or red leaves in autumn. ~400 steps up; arrive before dawn for a spot.
- Oshino Hakkai — a village of spring-fed ponds with thatched roofs and Fuji views.
- Lake Saiko / Lake Motosu (the view on the ¥1,000 note) for sunset.
🍜 Eat: yoshida udon (chewy local noodles) and Fuji-area soba; strawberry sweets in season.
📷 Photo spot: the Chureito Pagoda, Fuji and blossom/maple in one frame at first light — the most famous composition in Japan. A short telephoto stacks the elements.

Day 3 — Last light & return
- A flexible morning for a second attempt at the reflection shot if weather cooperates.
- Optional: the Fujisan Sengen Shrine in Fujiyoshida, or a lakeside onsen, before the bus back to Tokyo.
🍜 Eat: a farewell bowl of hōtō, or grilled ayu (sweetfish) by the lake.
📷 Photo spot: the red gate and cedar avenue of Arakura Sengen, or a clean lake reflection if the wind drops.

Note: climbing Mt. Fuji
To climb Fuji (rather than photograph it), the official season is roughly early July to early September only. It's a long, non-technical but tough overnight hike, usually timed to reach the summit for sunrise (goraiko). Outside that window the trails are closed and dangerous.

November–February at dawn is your best bet for a clear, snow-capped Fuji. Two-plus nights gives you multiple sunrises to beat the cloud. Layers and warmth for the pre-dawn shoots.
