While the rest of Japan swelters through July and August, Hokkaido stays cool, green and wide open. This is Japan's big-sky north: lavender fields running to the hills, the surreal Blue Pond of Biei, volcanic hot springs, and seafood and dairy that locals travel for. It feels less like Japan and more like a cross between Hokkaido and Provence — and the landscapes are the whole point, which is why this one is best done by car.

Getting around: do you need a car?

Yes — rent a car. This is the one route where driving is strongly recommended. Furano and Biei's flower farms, the Blue Pond and the patchwork hills are spread out and barely served by public transport; a car turns a frustrating trip into a glorious one. Roads are wide, well-signed and easy, and an International Driving Permit (arranged at home before you travel) is required. Pick up at Sapporo or New Chitose Airport. (Sapporo and Otaru themselves are walkable/train-served, so you only need the car from Day 3.)

Day 1 — Sapporo

Ease into Hokkaido's capital.

  • Odori Park, the TV Tower and the historic Clock Tower.
  • Susukino for dinner.

Day 2 — Otaru day trip

A 30-minute train ride to a romantic port town.

  • The Otaru Canal, stone warehouses, glass and music-box workshops.
  • Some of Hokkaido's best sushi along Sushiya-dōri.

Day 3 — Pick up the car → Furano

Collect your rental and drive into flower country (~2.5h).

  • Farm Tomita — rows of lavender running to the hills (peak mid-July), plus fields of poppies, lupins and sunflowers.

Day 4 — Biei: blue pond & patchwork hills

Day 5 — Daisetsuzan / Asahidake

Into Japan's largest national park.

  • The Asahidake Ropeway up Hokkaido's highest peak, with easy alpine boardwalk loops past steaming vents.
  • Or the Asahiyama Zoo if travelling with kids.

Day 6 — Noboribetsu onsen

Drive south to Hokkaido's top hot-spring town (~3h).

Day 7 — Return & depart

When to go

Mid-July is peak lavender; June and August are green and cool. Hokkaido summer is mild (jacket for mornings and the mountains) and largely escapes the rainy season that hits the rest of Japan.
