Okinawa & the Islands: A 6-Day Itinerary (Beaches, Reefs & Ryukyu Culture)

Edit this route

Okinawa feels like a different country — subtropical, slower, and shaped by the old Ryukyu Kingdom rather than mainland Japan. Think white-sand beaches, some of Asia's clearest water, a unique cuisine, and the world's highest concentration of centenarians. This 6-day route pairs Naha and the historic south with island-hopping to the Kerama Islands and the beaches of the north. A rental car makes it all work.

Is this route right for you?

Perfect if you want beaches, snorkelling/diving and a culture distinct from mainland Japan — a proper island holiday. Not the trip if you're chasing temples and cities.

At a glance

  • Duration: 6 days / 5 nights
  • Best season: April–June and September–October (July–August is hot, peak, and typhoon-prone)
  • Pace: Relaxed
  • Ideal for: Beach and water lovers, divers, culture-curious travellers

Rough daily budget (per person)

Style Per day
Budget £70–100 / $90–130
Mid-range £120–190 / $150–240
Comfortable £260+ / $330+

Getting around: do you need a car?

Yes — rent a car (outside Naha, it's essential). Okinawa's beaches, capes and the Churaumi Aquarium are strung along the coast with limited public transport; a car is the difference between seeing one thing a day and seeing everything. Naha itself has a monorail and is walkable, so pick the car up when you head north on Day 3. An International Driving Permit is required.

Pick up the car and head up the coast.

  • Cape Manzamo — a dramatic elephant-trunk cliff over the sea.
  • The Churaumi Aquarium — whale sharks in a vast tank.

🍜 Eat: Agu pork (heritage Okinawan pork); tropical-fruit smoothies (mango, shikuwasa).

  • Sefa-utaki, the kingdom's most sacred forest shrine.

🍜 Eat: sata andagi (Okinawan doughnuts); a clifftop café lunch on the southern coast.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal; the sea is warm and skies clear. Avoid typhoon season (roughly Aug–Sept), which disrupts ferries and flights. Winter is mild but too cool for comfortable swimming.
