Osaka, Then The Wider Kansai Story.
Use Osaka as an energetic base for food, nightlife and day trips to Nara, Kobe and Himeji.
Osaka is the easiest place in Japan to underestimate. Many travellers use it only as a place to eat between Kyoto and the airport, but it works brilliantly as a lively base for the wider Kansai region.
Why stay in Osaka?
Osaka is practical, energetic and often better value than Kyoto. It has direct rail links to Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Kyoto and Kansai Airport, making it useful for travellers who want one base and several day trips.
Best areas to stay
- Namba: best for nightlife, Dotonbori, food and first-time energy.
- Umeda: best for transport, shopping and easy rail connections.
- Tennoji: useful for Shinsekai, Abeno Harukas and southern rail links.
A 3 to 5 day Kansai plan
Day 1: Start with Namba, Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho and Kuromon Market. Osaka is a food city, so let dinner be part of the sightseeing rather than an afterthought.
Day 2: Visit Osaka Castle Park, Umeda and the riverfront. In the evening, choose either Shinsekai for retro atmosphere or Kitashinchi for a more polished night out.
Day 3: Take a day trip to Nara. Go early for Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha, then walk beyond the most crowded deer areas for a calmer view of the old capital.
Day 4: Add Himeji for the castle, or Kobe for the harbour, hillside neighbourhoods and a gentler urban day.
Day 5: Use Osaka as a softer Kyoto access point if accommodation in Kyoto is expensive, or spend the day on food, shopping and neighbourhood wandering.
What to eat
Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are the obvious starts, but Osaka is also good for kushikatsu, udon, standing bars and casual counters. The best strategy is not to chase one famous place for every meal; choose an area, walk, and follow the local rhythm.
