Getting around: do you need a car?

A mix — public transport works with planning; a car helps in San'in. The Nakasendo post towns are linked by train + a short local bus (and the walk between Magome and Tsumago is the point). The San'in coast (Matsue, Izumo, Tottori) is on rail lines, but services are infrequent and slow — a rental car for days 4–6 gives you far more freedom if you're comfortable driving. Otherwise, plan around the timetables.

Day 1–2 — The Nakasendo post towns

The old highway between Kyoto and Edo, through the Kiso Valley.

  • Walk the preserved Magome → Tsumago trail (~8 km, ~3 hours) between two Edo-era post towns of dark-wood inns.
  • Narai-juku, the longest surviving post town, further north.

Day 3 — Transfer west

A long but scenic travel day toward the San'in coast (via Nagoya/Kyoto and Okayama). Break it with a stop if you like; settle in around Matsue for the evening.

Day 4 — Matsue & the Adachi Museum

Day 5 — Izumo Taisha

  • Izumo Taisha — one of Japan's oldest and most important shrines, dedicated to the god of marriage, with a colossal sacred straw rope (shimenawa). The whole San'in region is steeped in Japanese mythology.
