Getting around: do you need a car?

How the "sakura front" works (read this)
Cherry blossom blooms in a wave that moves south to north:
- Late March–early April: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka
- Mid–late April: Tohoku (e.g., Hirosaki)
- Late April–early May: Hokkaido
Peak bloom (mankai) lasts only about a week, and exact dates shift each year with the weather. Forecasts are published from late January — check them before locking plans, and build in a few days' flexibility. Higher-elevation spots (like Yoshino) bloom a little later than nearby cities, which you can use to your advantage.

Day 1–2 — Tokyo
- Chidorigafuchi — boats beneath blossoms by the Imperial Palace moat.
