In the calm Seto Inland Sea, a cluster of sleepy islands has been transformed into one of the world's great destinations for contemporary art and architecture. Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima mix Tadao Ando concrete, Monet and James Turrell, abandoned-house art projects, and Yayoi Kusama's polka-dot pumpkins on the piers. This 4-day route does them properly — and at the islands' own unhurried, ferry-set pace.

Getting around: do you need a car?

No car — ferries, island buses and a rented bike. You reach the islands by ferry from Takamatsu or Uno port, and get around each island on foot, by local bus, or (best of all) a rented bicycle or e-bike. Bringing a car onto the islands is unnecessary and often awkward. The one thing to master is the ferry timetable — it sets your whole day.

Getting there & where to stay

Reach the islands via Takamatsu (on Shikoku) or Uno port near Okayama (on the Shinkansen line). You can stay on Naoshima itself (limited — book early) or base in Takamatsu and day-trip by ferry.

Day 1 — Naoshima: Benesse & the pumpkins

  • The Benesse House area — outdoor sculpture above the sea.
  • Kusama's iconic yellow pumpkin on its pier, and the red pumpkin at Miyanoura port.

Day 2 — Naoshima: Chichu & Art House Project

  • The Chichu Art Museum (Tadao Ando) — Monet's Water Lilies and a transcendent James Turrell room.
  • The Art House Project in Honmura village — old houses turned into installations.

Day 3 — Teshima & Inujima

Ferry-hop to quieter islands.

Day 4 — Depart

The islands host the Setouchi Triennale, a major contemporary-art festival held roughly every three years (most recently 2025) across spring, summer and autumn sessions. In a festival year there's far more to see — and far more visitors — so book everything early.
