Tokyo is really a dozen cities stitched together — each district its own world — and it's ringed by the Kanto region: shrines in the mountains, a Great Buddha by the sea, and old towns that survived the centuries. This 5-day plan goes deeper than the highlight reel, mixing three days in the city with two of Kanto's best day trips, so you leave actually understanding Tokyo rather than just ticking it off.

Getting around: do you need a car?

Public transport only — absolutely no car. Tokyo has the densest, most efficient rail network on the planet; a car is a liability here (no street parking, heavy tolls, traffic). Get a Suica/PASMO IC card and you can tap onto any of the JR, Metro and private lines. The day trips to Nikkō and Kamakura are also train rides. Grab the Tokyo subway as your backbone and you'll never wait more than a few minutes.

Route map

A city hub with two spokes: central Tokyo (3 days), a day trip north to Nikkō (~2h), and a day trip south to Kamakura & the coast (~1h).

Day 1 — East Tokyo & the old town

The Tokyo that survived the war and the bubble.

• Morning: Asakusa — Sensō-ji temple and Nakamise street before the crowds.
• Midday: Ueno — the museum-filled park and the bustling Ameyoko market street under the railway tracks.
• Afternoon: Yanaka — the low-rise old neighbourhood of wooden houses, temples, cats, and a beautiful cemetery that turns pink in cherry season.

🍜 Eat: old-school monjayaki, street snacks down Ameyoko, and a sit-down tonkatsu in Ueno.

Day 2 — West Tokyo: fashion, neon & the icons

• Morning: Meiji Jingū shrine and its forest, then Harajuku (Takeshita-dōri) and Omotesandō's architecture.
• Afternoon: Shibuya — the Scramble Crossing and Shibuya Sky rooftop.
• Evening: Shinjuku — the tiny eateries of Omoide Yokocho, the neon of Kabukichō, and the bars of Golden Gai.

Day 3 — Day trip: Nikkō

Two hours north, a UNESCO shrine complex set in cedar forest and mountains.

• Tōshō-gū — the wildly ornate mausoleum of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
• The Shinkyō Bridge, the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, and the waterfalls and Lake Chūzenji up the Irohazaka hairpins if you have time.

Day 4 — Day trip: Kamakura & the coast

An hour south, the seaside former capital.

• Kōtoku-in — the open-air Great Buddha.
• Hasedera temple, with hydrangeas in June and bay views.
• The Enoden tram along the coast to Enoshima island for sunset.

🍜 Eat: shirasu-don (whitebait rice bowl) by the sea; matcha soft-serve in the lanes.

Day 5 — Modern Tokyo & departure

• Morning: a sushi breakfast at Toyosu (or the outer Tsukiji stalls).

• Afternoon: Ginza department-store food halls, or Akihabara for electronics and anime, before the airport.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is hot/humid (but festival season); winter is cold, dry and crisp with clear Fuji-viewing days. Avoid the mid-June–mid-July rains.
