Plan Gangwon around one season

Gangwon is not one compact destination. Mountains, ski areas and east-coast cities sit across a broad province, and trying to combine every highlight creates long transfer days. This five-day route focuses on the most useful first journey: Sokcho and Seoraksan, followed by Gangneung and the coast.

Day 1 — Seoul to Sokcho

Travel east from Seoul and keep the first afternoon light. Check into Sokcho, walk the waterfront and explore Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market. This is the right evening for squid, grilled fish, market snacks and a first view of the sea rather than another major transfer.

Day 2 — Seoraksan National Park

Start early and choose a trail that matches the weather and your fitness. Shorter walks around the lower valleys still deliver granite peaks, forest and temple scenery; longer ridge routes require proper equipment and more stable conditions. Do not build the day around a single summit if cloud, rain, ice or heat makes the route unsafe.

Return to Sokcho for a second night. Keeping the same base avoids hiking with luggage and gives the park a full day.

Day 3 — Sokcho coast and local neighbourhoods

Use the morning for the coast, a lakeside walk or a slower neighbourhood such as Abai Village. In the afternoon, travel south to Gangneung and settle near the centre, station or beach depending on your priorities.

Day 4 — Gangneung

Build the day around Gyeongpo, the nearby coast and one cultural stop. Gangneung’s cafe-lined shoreline is easy to over-schedule; leave time to sit by the water. Add a historic house, local market or museum rather than driving between distant photo points.

Day 5 — Coast morning and return

Take a final early walk before returning to Seoul. If the trip continues south, connect toward the next region only after checking the current rail or bus route; east-coast connections are improving, but not every journey is as direct as it appears on a map.

Where to stay

• Sokcho: choose the centre for food and buses, or the park entrance for an early trail start
• Gangneung: stay near the station for transport or near the coast for atmosphere

Season notes

Late spring and autumn are strongest for hiking. Summer brings humidity and busy beaches. Winter can be beautiful, but mountain paths may need specialist equipment and some routes can close. Ski travellers should build a separate resort-led itinerary rather than adding a rushed ski day to this coastal route.

What to eat

Look for Sokcho seafood, squid dishes, cold noodles and Gangneung’s regional tofu dishes. Markets are useful for tasting several foods without committing the entire evening to one famous restaurant.

Continue the journey

Return to Seoul or continue south only when it improves the route. For a first Korea trip, Gangwon is best used as a focused nature extension rather than a detour between every major city.
