Book These Before You Fly
Beijing’s big sights run on advance reservations — one evening of admin a week out saves whole mornings on the ground:
Forbidden City: released 7 days ahead, passport required, closed Mondays, sells out in season

Work south-to-north through the capital’s ceremonial heart. Qianmen’s old shopfronts for breakfast and browsing, the square for its monuments and sheer scale, then a look at the NCPA — the titanium “Egg” floating on its moat, Chang’an Avenue’s boldest modern statement (book a performance for another evening if the programme tempts you). The Forbidden City takes the afternoon: south gate in, north gate out, three hours minimum. End on Jingshan Park’s hill as the light goes golden — the full palace laid out below is the single best photograph in Beijing, and sunset is its hour. The Wanchun Pavilion at the top earns its bench time.
Stay near here: the Qianmen–Wangfujing core puts you walking distance from Day 1 and the flag-raising, with Dongzhimen’s food streets fifteen minutes away by taxi.
Day 2: Hutong Beijing, Prince To Punk
Prince Gong’s Mansion (2h) → Shichahai lakes (2h) → Nanluoguxiang (1.5h) → Lama Temple (1.5h) → hutong livehouse (evening)
The Qing aristocracy’s side of old Beijing in the morning: Prince Gong’s Mansion, whose garden folly rivals the palace it served. Then the Shichahai lakes — former residences, Yandai Xiejie’s crooked antique lane, the Drum and Bell Towers — drifting east through Nanluoguxiang’s snack-and-souvenir crush to the Lama Temple for late-afternoon incense.
Evening is this route’s signature move: Beijing’s hutongs hide a genuine live-music circuit. Jianghu Bar, Yuyong Yishan, MAO Livehouse and Candy Third Floor are the names to search — folk to punk in courtyard settings, most shows ¥60–150 on the door. This is the old city after dark that tour groups never see.
Day 3: Modern Beijing

Morning at the Olympic Green — the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube are best from outside (the Cube’s interior waterpark is a family option). Metro Line 8 drops you at Olympic Sports Center.
Afternoon at 798 — the East-German-built factory complex turned contemporary art district. Don’t arrive before 11am; galleries wake late. UCCA Center for Contemporary Art anchors it, but 798 rewards aimlessness: sculpture yards, locomotive plaza, poster shops, and café-galleries that are exhibitions themselves. Transport is 798’s weak point — Line 14 to Jiangtai then a bus or 20-minute walk, or just take a DiDi.
Evening in Sanlitun: Taikoo Li North for flagship-brand architecture and the city’s best people-watching, South for cheaper eats, the surrounding streets for cocktail bars. Taxi there; it’s awkward by metro (Line 10 Tuanjiehu, then 500m).
Day 4: The Gardens Of Haidian
Summer Palace (4h) → Old Summer Palace / Yuanmingyuan (2–3h) → university district (optional)
The Summer Palace deserves its half-day: enter at the East Palace Gate (metro Line 4 to Beigongmen serves the back entrance; ride one stop further for the classic route) and work through Renshou Hall, the Long Corridor, Longevity Hill’s temple stack, and the marble boat, with Kunming Lake doing the scenery throughout. The front-hill building group is the masterpiece — don’t shortcut it.
Then Yuanmingyuan, the Old Summer Palace — the European-style ruins left by the 1860 sacking, deliberately unrestored. It reads completely differently from everything else you’ll see this week: history as open wound rather than restored glory. South gate in (its own Line 4 stop), Western Mansions ruins first.
On the universities: Mafengwo-style itineraries send you into Peking University and Tsinghua’s campuses, and they are genuinely beautiful — but campus entry now runs on reservation mini-programs that are difficult with a foreign passport. Treat a campus visit as a bonus if you can arrange it, not a plan.
Day 5: The Great Wall

Our recommendation is Mutianyu: the section international visitors consistently prefer — fully restored but a fraction of Badaling’s crowds, forested valley views, cable car up and a toboggan run down that nobody regrets. Direct tourist shuttles run in season from central Beijing; otherwise a pre-booked round-trip driver splits well between two or more people. Go early: on the wall by 9am means an hour of near-solitude.
The classic Chinese-itinerary alternative is Badaling plus the Ming Tombs — Badaling is the grandest restored section and now reachable by high-speed rail in under 30 minutes (/book/), at the price of serious crowds. The Ming Tombs (Changling and the Sacred Way) are solemn and skippable in equal measure; most international visitors rate them a half-day they’d trade back. If it’s your first Wall trip: Mutianyu, no tombs, longer on the wall.
The Practical Layer
Pace: Days 1 and 4 are the heavy walkers. Pre-cut options: NCPA exterior (Day 1), Nanluoguxiang (Day 2), Olympic Park (Day 3).
