Food
Food should help the day feel grounded. Keep key meals close to the walking area or overnight base.

Plan one proper local meal near the day’s main walking area.

Keep travel-day food simple, close to the station or hotel zone.
Must know
Keep the route useful, not overpacked.
- Gansu should have a clear role in the route, not just appear because it is on the map.
- Choose the base before choosing the hotel; station and neighborhood location matter.
- Do not stack too many day trips if the province is part of a larger China itinerary.
- When you send detailed route notes, this page can become a proper day-by-day planning hub.
Route decision
How many days do you need for Gansu?
Choose one travel corridor instead of trying to cover the whole province in a short trip.
- 5–7 days for the Silk Road: travel west from Lanzhou through Zhangye and Jiayuguan to Dunhuang, using trains for the long sectors.
- 5–6 days for Gannan: make a highland loop through Xiahe, Labrang, Langmusi and the grasslands with a driver or organised transport.
- 10–14 days for both: combine the Hexi Corridor and Gannan only when you can absorb the long transfer back across the province.
First-time visitors usually get the clearest trip from the Lanzhou–Zhangye–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang route. Choose Gannan for monasteries, grasslands and slower highland travel.
