The Gannan Grassland Loop in 6 Days

Gannan — the Tibetan grasslands of southern Gansu — is one of the most beautiful and least-visited corners of the Tibetan plateau: the great Labrang Monastery, the wildflower wetlands and yak pastures of the Amdo grasslands, the twin monastery town of Langmusi, and the storybook stone-village valley of Zhagana.

Route Notes
Gannan — the Tibetan grasslands of southern Gansu — is one of the most beautiful and least-visited corners of the Tibetan plateau: the great Labrang Monastery, the wildflower wetlands and yak pastures of the Amdo grasslands, the twin monastery town of Langmusi, and the storybook stone-village valley of Zhagana. It loops out of Lanzhou (Gansu’s capital), not Chengdu — and being Gansu, it needs no Tibet permit. Best months: June–September, when the grasslands flower. This is a driving route.

First, a geography note

Despite appearing under "Sichuan" on some Chinese travel sites, Gannan is in Gansu Province (the loop dips briefly into northern Sichuan around Langmusi). Like the Tibetan areas of Sichuan and Qinghai, it’s Tibetan in culture but freely travelled — no Tibet Travel Permit, no mandatory guide. It pairs naturally with the Sichuan plateau routes to its south, or with a Silk Road trip through Gansu to its north.

The practical layer

  • How to do it: this is a driving loop — hired car-with-driver is the standard for foreign visitors; small-group tours run from Lanzhou. Self-drive needs a temporary Chinese licence (IDP not valid in mainland China).
  • Altitude: Gannan runs 2,900–3,500m — gentler than the Sichuan high passes but still real. Hydrate, pace, watch for symptoms.
  • Getting to the start: Lanzhou has an airport and is a major rail hub (a Silk Road / Xi’an gateway) (train booking options).
  • Payments & maps: QR payments reach the grassland towns; download offline maps and translation first: Alipay guide / China travel essentials.
  • China entry: China visa-free policy.
  • Connect it southward: Sêrtar and Danba loop / West Sichuan and Yading loop

What to book first

Reserve the car and driver before plateau accommodation, especially from July to August. Confirm that the quote covers the full loop, driver lodging, fuel, tolls and flexible weather stops; then reserve Zhagana and Langmusi nights.

Route answer

How many days do you need for Gannan?

Six days is the practical minimum for a Lanzhou–Xiahe–Tangke–Langmusi–Zhagana loop. Allow seven or eight days if you want two nights in Zhagana or a gentler first day at altitude.

  • Permit: this route stays in Gansu and northern Sichuan, outside the Tibet Autonomous Region, so it does not use the Tibet Travel Permit system.
  • Transport: hire a driver or join a small group because public transport between plateau towns is fragmented.
  • Altitude: several nights are around 2,900–3,500 metres; keep the first day light and do not ignore persistent symptoms.

Road access and local restrictions can change, so reconfirm the final route with the operator shortly before departure.
