Guilin Arrival

Land, walk, eat. Guilin's compact centre handles arrival day by itself: the East-West Lanes for street food under Solitary Beauty Peak, then the Two Rivers, Four Lakes boat after dark — a dozen floodlit karst peaks, the lit Sun and Moon Pagodas, and your bearings acquired from the water.
The Yongfu Detour
Yongfu Tiankeng (3h) → Jinzhongshan (4h)
Southwest to Yongfu county for the region's geological oddity: the Yongfu tiankeng, the only karst sinkhole in the greater Guilin area you can walk into from the bottom, where cave system and collapsed doline meet. Jinzhongshan pairs the area's peaks with its longevity-culture wellness identity (this county trades on its centenarians). An honest note: this is the route's most skippable day — if a week is tight, fold it and give the terraces two days instead.
The Longji Terraces

The Dragon's Backbone: 650 years of Zhuang and Yao terrace-building pouring down whole mountains. The Jinkeng/Dazhai section has the cable car to the Golden Buddha Peak summit view — ride up, then walk down through terraces and the red-Yao villages (famous, among much else, for the women's floor-length hair). Seasonal physics apply: flooded mirror terraces late May–June, harvest gold late September–October. If any night on this route deserves a village guesthouse, it's this one — sunrise on the terraces belongs to those who slept there.
Sanjiang — the Dong Country
Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge (1h) → the Chengyang Eight Villages (3h) → Sanjiang Drum Tower (1h)
West into Sanjiang, China's most populous Dong autonomous county, for the day this route is named after. The Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge is the masterpiece of the form — wood and stone, pavilioned, built without a single nail — and behind it the Eight Villages spread along the river: drum towers, stilted houses, and scheduled Dong chorus performances (the polyphonic "grand song" tradition is UNESCO-listed; hearing it in a drum-tower square is the trip's high point). The county seat adds the world's tallest drum tower and longest wind-and-rain bridge for the superlative collectors. Sleep in a Chengyang village guesthouse rather than the county town if atmosphere outranks plumbing on your list.
Rongshui — the Miao Valleys
Yuanbaoshan Longnügou (3h) → Yubu Miao village (3h)
South into Miao country: Longnügou ("Dragon Girl Gorge") under Yuanbaoshan's old-growth forest — pools, falls and wooden-house hamlets — and the Yubu village area for Miao hospitality in its organised form: lusheng pipes, benches of rice wine, and the block-printed indigo everywhere. It's staged in the way all visitable village culture is staged, and warmer than that sentence suggests.
Liuzhou
Longtan Park (3h) → Liyufeng (3h)
The route's one big city. Liuzhou — "the Dragon City", two thousand years old, wrapped in a river bend "like a teapot" — offers Longtan Park's karst-and-minority-architecture ensemble and the Liyufeng (Carp Peak) cluster by the Liujiang. It's also the home of luosifen, the river-snail rice noodle that is China's most gloriously divisive dish: the fermented bamboo funk clears rooms and creates addicts, and eating a bowl in its home city is mandatory. Comfortable hotels, big-city logistics, laundry night.
Jinxiu — the Yao Mountains
Dayaoshan Panwangjie (3h) → Shengtangshan (3h)
Finish east in Jinxiu, seat of the Yao autonomous county in the Dayaoshan range: the Panwangjie area for the stone forests and Yao ancestral-culture sites, and Shengtangshan — "the fairyland" — a granite massif of sheer red walls, cloud seas and old-growth forest that stays genuinely wild. It's the route's most physical day; the reward is ending the week somewhere that still feels found rather than visited. Return via Liuzhou's rail hub.

The parts that affect comfort most in Guangxi: transport, maps, payments and how much countryside to take on.
- The honest transport note first: this route is functionally a driver-hire itinerary. Longsheng, Sanjiang, Rongshui and Jinxiu have thin and slow bus links between them; a hired car with driver for the week (arranged from Guilin, split between travellers) converts the route from an endurance event into a holiday. Sanjiang does have high-speed rail (to Guilin in under an hour) if you restructure around it: train booking options.
