Two days forces a choice, and this itinerary makes a good one: one day walking the city’s most atmospheric streets — the former French Concession’s plane-tree lanes, the old town, and the Bund at dusk — and one full day at Shanghai Disneyland. It’s the short version most first-timers with a tight layover actually want. Year-round route.

Day 1: Concession Streets to the Bund

Wukang Road (2h) → Anfu Road (1.5h) → Yu Garden (1h) → City God Temple / Yuyuan Bazaar (1.5h) → the Bund (2h)

Start in the former French Concession, which most itineraries underweight and international visitors love most. Wukang Road is the set piece: a hundred years of French-era villas under two rows of plane trees, anchored by the prow-shaped Wukang Mansion (Normandie Apartments) — the single most photographed building in residential Shanghai. Drift into Anfu Road for the concept stores, coffee and the city’s most quietly stylish lunch options.

Cross town to the old city for the Yu Garden — a classical Jiangnan garden of rockeries and koi ponds, a pocket of the seventeenth century inside the twenty-first (“book ahead — Yu Garden now runs on advance reservation, and it’s closed Mondays”). The surrounding City God Temple bazaar (Yuyuan) is full-contact snack territory: Nanxiang for the soup dumplings that made the neighbourhood famous, and every other Shanghai small-eat around it.

End on the Bund as the light drops. One thing the guides never quite say plainly: stand on the Puxi (west) side — the colonial “museum of world architecture” is at your back, and Pudong’s futuristic skyline lights up directly across the water. Blue hour into full dark is the window; the lights come fully on around sunset.

Day 2: Shanghai Disneyland

Shanghai Disney Resort (full day)

Arrive at opening — mornings are quietest and the queues only grow. Download the official Shanghai Disney Resort app before you go: live wait times, the park map, show schedules and mobile ordering all live in it, and it’s the difference between riding six things and sixteen. A common strategy is to work the park anticlockwise from the entrance. Metro Line 11 runs straight to Disney Resort station; a taxi from the centre is about 40 minutes.

The park takes foreign cards more readily than the city outside it, but you’ll still want mobile payments set up for everything else in Shanghai — see the practical layer.

• Getting in: Shanghai has two airports (Pudong for most international flights, Hongqiao for domestic and regional) and is the high-speed rail hub of eastern China — Beijing in ~4.5 hours, Hangzhou in under an hour (train booking options).
