Climb out of the Chengdu basin over the Balang Shan, stopping at Cat’s Nose Ridge (Maobiliang) for the classic view of Four Sisters Mountain (Siguniang Shan) — the "Alps of the East," four snow peaks like veiled maidens. Explore Shuangqiao Valley, then descend to Danba and the Jiaju Tibetan Village, ranked among China’s most beautiful villages — Gyarong Tibetan houses stacked up a green hillside.

Route Notes
This is the great western Sichuan road trip — Chengdu out onto the Tibetan plateau to Daocheng Yading, "the last pure land on the blue planet," and back. Crucially for foreign travellers: it’s entirely within Sichuan, so no Tibet permit, no mandatory guide, no group — the plateau’s beauty without the Tibet Autonomous Region’s paperwork. Best months: April–October (autumn for colour, late spring for wildflowers).

Why this loop, and the permit truth

Yading sits in Garzê Prefecture — Tibetan in culture, Sichuan in administration. That distinction is everything: unlike the road to Lhasa (Sichuan-Tibet Highway guide), this entire circuit needs no Tibet Travel Permit and no organised tour. You can hire a car with driver, join a small-group tour, or — with a temporary Chinese licence — self-drive. What you can’t skip is acclimatisation: this loop lives above 3,000m and tops 4,700m at Yading’s Milk Lake. Read the altitude note before you commit.

Altitude: the real gatekeeper

This is a high-plateau trip, and altitude — not scenery — is what sends people home early. You’ll sleep at 3,700m+ and stand at 4,600m. Ascend gradually (this itinerary’s staged climb helps), drink far more water than feels natural, avoid alcohol the first days, and treat worsening headache, nausea and breathlessness as a signal to descend, not endure. Ask your doctor about acetazolamide before travelling. Daocheng Yading Airport is the world’s highest civilian airport (4,411m) — flying in directly is possible but brutal for acclimatisation; the overland climb is kinder to your body.

The practical layer

  • How to do it: hired car-with-driver is the standard for foreign visitors (solves both the licence issue and the exhausting mountain driving); small-group tours from Chengdu are plentiful; self-drive needs a temporary Chinese licence (IDP not valid in mainland China).
  • Shorter version: fly Chengdu→Daocheng and focus on Yading over 2–3 days if you’re time-poor — but build in an altitude buffer day.
  • Payments & maps: QR payments reach plateau towns; download offline maps and translation before leaving Chengdu: Alipay guide / China travel essentials.
  • China entry: China visa-free policy.
  • More of Sichuan’s plateau: Sêrtar and Danba loop / Sichuan-Tibet Highway guide / Chengdu itinerary
