Macao is a separate immigration zone from both mainland China and Hong Kong. Many passports enter visa-free, but the stay periods are not the same as Hong Kong’s, and Macao has its own rules on passport validity, funds, onward travel and border crossings.
Check before booking
Macao entry rules and mainland China entry rules are separate. Confirm your passport’s Macao visa-free period, then separately check the mainland China policy that applies if you plan to continue to Zhuhai, Guangzhou or elsewhere in China.
The short version
- Macao is its own immigration zone. Entering Hong Kong or mainland China does not give you the right to enter Macao, and entering Macao does not give you the right to enter mainland China.
- 88 countries can enter Macao visa-free. UK citizens get 6 months; many EU/Schengen passports, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico get 90 days; the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand usually fall into the 30-day tier.
- Macao is stricter than many travelers expect. Your passport should be valid for your intended stay plus at least 90 days, and immigration can ask for proof of funds and onward travel.
- For mainland China, Macao is a gateway, not a waiver. At the mainland desk, your result depends on your passport’s China visa-free, transit or visa status.
Who gets how long
Macao’s visa-exempt stay periods are published by the Public Security Police Force and grouped by passport. The practical headline tiers are:
- 6 months: United Kingdom, for British citizens.
- 90 days: many EU and Schengen-state passports, plus Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Serbia, Albania, Morocco, Egypt, Mongolia and others.
- 3 months: New Zealand, Israel, Cyprus and Lebanon.
- 30 days: the default tier for many listed countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, South Africa, Türkiye, the UAE, India and the Philippines.
- 14 days: Brunei and Kazakhstan.
Hong Kong permanent residents receive a longer Macao stay than ordinary tourists, which is one reason Hong Kong-Macao travel feels almost local for many residents. For visitors, treat the two places as separate immigration entries with separate clocks.
If your passport is not on the visa-exempt list, Macao may issue an entry permit on arrival at the border for some nationalities. The public fee schedule lists MOP 200 for a single-entry individual permit and MOP 300 for a multiple-entry individual permit, generally allowing up to 30 days. Some passports must arrange a Macao visa through a Chinese embassy or consulate before travel, so do not assume arrival permission is available.
Rules people miss
Passport validity is your stay plus 90 days. Macao’s visitor condition is stricter than many travelers expect. If your passport expires soon, a short Macao stop may still be possible, but a longer stay can fail the validity rule.
Funds can be checked. Macao publishes fixed minimum subsistence amounts: MOP 5,000 for stays up to 7 days, MOP 10,000 for up to 14 days, MOP 15,000 for up to 21 days, and MOP 20,000 for longer visitor stays. Most ordinary tourists are not asked, but travelers with one-way plans, no accommodation or unclear funds should be ready to show a card, hotel booking and onward route.
Onward travel matters. Macao requires visitors to hold a return or onward ticket unless they qualify for a specific exemption. If you are using Macao as a bridge into mainland China or Hong Kong, keep proof of the next leg: ferry, bridge bus, train, flight or hotel booking in the next place.
No passport stamp is normal. Macao issues a printed arrival slip showing your permitted stay. Photograph it as soon as you receive it.
Overstaying is not casual. Macao law sets daily overstay fines and allows removal or future entry refusal for more serious cases. Frequent short entries and exits that look like an attempt to avoid stay limits can also cause trouble at the border.
Crossing to mainland China
Macao is physically attached to Zhuhai, which makes it one of the easiest ways to add south China to a Hong Kong or Pearl River Delta trip. The important rule is simple: when you cross from Macao to Zhuhai, you are entering mainland China, so mainland China entry policy applies.

Border Gate / Portas do Cerco. This is the classic crossing between northern Macao and Zhuhai’s Gongbei area. It is useful because Zhuhai Railway Station is nearby, with onward intercity rail toward Guangzhou.
Qingmao. A newer pedestrian crossing near the Border Gate area, often useful for late or streamlined crossings. Check current operating hours before relying on any border point late at night.
Hengqin. Practical for Cotai, the casino resort area and southern Zhuhai. It can be the better choice if your hotel is near Cotai rather than the old peninsula.
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The bridge connects Macao with Hong Kong and Zhuhai by shuttle bus. For many travelers, it is now the most practical Hong Kong-Macao route, especially when ferries are expensive or weather-sensitive.

Ferries. Ferries still connect Macao with Hong Kong and Shenzhen’s Shekou port. Taipa Ferry Terminal is especially convenient for the airport and Cotai hotels.
Airport choice. Macau International Airport is compact and useful for regional routes. For mainland domestic flights, Zhuhai Jinwan Airport can be cheaper after a border crossing because it operates as a domestic Chinese airport.
A useful Hong Kong, Macao and mainland route
For a first south China route, a clean structure is often: Hong Kong first, Macao second, Zhuhai third, then Guangzhou by rail. It keeps each immigration zone clear, avoids backtracking through airports and lets you connect harbor city, old streets and mainland food regions in one logical line.
If your passport does not qualify for mainland China’s standard visa-free entry, check whether a transit policy or visa fits the exact route. Macao can be the “third region” for some mainland transit itineraries, but only when the route and ticketing meet the mainland rule.
Money in Macao
Macao uses the pataca, written as MOP. Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted at a 1:1 face-value rate, and the casino economy largely runs on HKD. That is convenient, but it quietly costs a little because the currencies are not exactly equal. Try to spend leftover MOP before leaving, since it is hard to use elsewhere.
Cards work well in major hotels, casino resorts and chain shops. Smaller restaurants and old-town businesses may prefer cash or QR payment. If you have already set up Alipay or WeChat Pay for mainland China, those apps can also be useful at many Macao merchants.
Common misconceptions
“Macao’s rules are the same as Hong Kong’s.” No. The stay periods, passport-validity rule and onward-ticket logic are different.
“If I entered Hong Kong, Macao is included.” No. Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China are three separate immigration zones.
“Macao is part of my mainland China stay.” For immigration purposes, it is not. Leaving mainland China for Macao ends that mainland entry.
“I need Mandarin.” Cantonese and Portuguese are official languages, English is common in tourism, and major signs are easy to navigate. Mandarin is useful, but not required for an ordinary visitor route.
FAQ
Can Americans do a Macao day trip from Hong Kong? Usually yes. US passports are in Macao’s 30-day visa-free tier. The mainland China side is the part that needs separate checking.
Do UK citizens really get six months? Yes, standard British citizens receive six months visa-free in Macao. Other British passport classes can differ, so verify if you do not hold an ordinary British citizen passport.
Is there an arrival card? For many visa-exempt visitors, the process is usually passport, inspection and a printed arrival slip. Keep the slip until you leave.
Can I work or study on visa-free entry? No. Visitor entry is for tourism or short permitted visits only.
Should I fly from Macao or Zhuhai? For regional international routes, Macau International Airport is convenient. For mainland domestic routes, compare Zhuhai after accounting for border time.
