Day 1 is Yangshuo at drifting pace: a poled bamboo raft on the Yulong River, the Ten-Mile Gallery by rental bike beneath the named peaks, and an evening on 1,400-year-old West Street — touristy, yes, and also where you want to be based, with cafés and bars running late. Day 2 is the postcard day: Xingping's old lanes and the short Li River cruise into the ¥20-note bend, back via the town's Shanshui Park. Spring travellers: the Gallery's rapeseed fields bloom around the karst in early season, and the Moon Hill guesthouse belt makes a cheap, green overnight alternative to West Street.
Huangyao Ancient Town

Three hours east, Huangyao is the day this route exists for: a Song-dynasty market town of eight flagstone streets, carved eaves and poem-painted house walls, named for the Huang and Yao families who settled it a millennium ago. Western readers may know it without knowing it — *the 2006 film The Painted Veil (Edward Norton, Naomi Watts) shot here, principally around the arched Dailong Bridge, the largest of the town's fifteen ancient crossings. The famous dragon-claw banyan* anchors the other end of the classic walk. Huangyao does small-hours tranquillity better than daytime spectacle: stay the night in one of the old-town guesthouses and have the streets at dusk and dawn, when it goes very quiet and very old.
Gupo Mountain
Gupo Mountain National Forest Park (6h)
Into Hezhou prefecture, on the three-way border of Guangxi, Guangdong and Hunan: Gupo Mountain is 65 square kilometres of near-total forest cover — waterfalls, high meadows, a tea plantation valley, and air so oxygen-rich the Chinese marketing calls it a "natural oxygen bar" with a straight face. Hong Kong TV viewers of a certain age know it as the filming ground of Plain Love (茶是故乡浓) and its sequel. This is a walking day: park shuttles link the trailheads, and the Fairy Waterfall and tea-garden circuits are the core. Sleep in Hezhou city, 16km away.
The Eighteen Waters
Shibashui Scenic Area (up to 6h)
North of Hezhou, Shibashui ("Eighteen Waters") stacks ten waterfalls and eighteen pools down nearly 300 vertical metres of forested valley — the widest curtain 60 metres across. The walk is a straightforward valley circuit between named falls; bring swim-adjacent expectations for the pools in summer and be prepared to simply sit at the big ones. This is the least internationally known stop on the route, which is precisely its value.
The Jade Stone Forest
Hezhou Yushilin (up to 6h, half a day is realistic)
Yushilin — the "jade stone forest" — is a Jurassic-era outcrop of white marble pinnacles, needle clusters and slot canyons standing alone among the ordinary limestone hills: sky corridors, a one-line-sky crevice, and formations with the usual poetic menagerie of names. Geologists call it a genuine anomaly; visitors call it the most photogenic two hours in Hezhou. And the exit is the route's best punchline: a mountain-length slide runs from the top to the base — five to ten minutes of undignified, unanimous joy. End here, then train home from Hezhou.

The parts that affect comfort most in Guangxi: transport, maps, payments and how much countryside to take on.
- The honest transport note: Days 1–2 run on bikes, boats and DiDi, but Days 3–6 realistically want a hired driver — Huangyao, Gupo, Shibashui and Yushilin are all rural sites with thin bus links. A round-trip driver from Yangshuo through Hezhou splits affordably between two or more travellers; arrange via your accommodation. Hezhou and Yangshuo both have high-speed rail for the bookends: train booking options.
- Getting in/out: Yangshuo connects to Guilin in ~30 minutes and to Guangzhou/Shenzhen/Hong Kong in ~3 hours by rail — and Hezhou sits on the same corridor, so the route exits east toward the Pearl River Delta naturally: Hong Kong entry guide.
