Qiandao Lake — literally “Thousand Island Lake” — is the vast, island-scattered reservoir a couple of hours west of Hangzhou, and the region’s favourite easy escape into clean air and water: cycling the shore, hilltop viewpoints over the islands, and a dawn hot-air-balloon float if you time it. Best in autumn (Sep–Nov), when the leaves turn. This is countryside — a car or e-bike helps.

Day 1: Viewpoints and the Shore

Tianyu Mountain viewpoint (2h) → Hongye Bay / Red Leaf Bay (2h) → lakeshore villages and lighthouses

The lake’s signature view is from above, and Tianyu Mountain (Tianyushan) viewpoint is the best of them — a short hike up delivers the postcard: dozens of green islands scattered across blue water to the horizon. Hongye Bay (“Red Leaf Bay”) is the autumn colour spot, the water at its bluest against the turning leaves. From there the shore rewards slow exploration: the Meifeng viewpoint, the little Tongziwu waystation, the old riverside town of Qinchuan, and the lakeside lighthouses that have become the area’s photo landmarks. The whole day suits an e-bike or a car — distances between viewpoints are real.

Day 2: The Balloon (and the Water)

Hot-air balloon at dawn (allow half a day) → lake cruise or cycling

The area’s signature experience is a dawn hot-air-balloon float over the islands — book ahead, go at first light for the still air and the mist burning off the water. It’s weather-dependent, so keep the morning flexible. With the rest of the day, the classic lake options open up: a boat cruise out to the island cluster (Central Lake Area is the main scenic zone, with islands themed around monkeys, birds and locks), or the region’s excellent cycling — the greenway around parts of the shore is one of eastern China’s nicest easy rides.

Honest notes

• This is a nature-and-air trip, not a sightseeing checklist. The pleasure is the water, the cycling and the viewpoints — go for the calm, not a list of monuments.
• A car or e-bike changes the trip. Public transport reaches the main scenic docks but not the scattered viewpoints; renting wheels opens the shore up.
• Autumn is the season. Spring and summer are green and pleasant, but the September–November window — cool air, turning leaves, clear water — is when Qiandao Lake is at its best.

• Getting here: high-speed rail from Hangzhou to Qiandao Lake (Chun’an) station in around 1–1.5 hours (train booking options), then local transport or a rental to the shore; or drive (~2.5h from Hangzhou).
