Suzhou in 2 Days: Classical Gardens, Canals and Kunqu (2026)

Suzhou is where China perfected the art of the garden — and two days covers the masterpieces, the poem-famous temple, the canal-side old streets and the opera that grew up here, with a modern lakefront to close. It's thirty minutes from Shanghai by rail, which makes it the easiest cultural day (or two) in the Yangtze delta. Best months: spring and autumn.

Last verified: July 2026

Suzhou is where China perfected the art of the garden — and two days covers the masterpieces, the poem-famous temple, the canal-side old streets and the opera that grew up here, with a modern lakefront to close. It’s thirty minutes from Shanghai by rail, which makes it the easiest cultural day (or two) in the Yangtze delta. Best months: spring and autumn.

Day 1: Temple, Tiger Hill, and an Evening of Opera

Hanshan Temple → Tiger Hill (Huqiu) → Shantang Street (evening pingtan/kunqu)

Begin at Hanshan Temple, made immortal by the Tang poem “A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge” that every Chinese schoolchild memorises — the bell, the stele carvings, the maple-bridge setting. Then Tiger Hill (Huqiu), called “the first scenic spot of Wu,” crowned by the leaning Huqiu Pagoda and wrapped around the Sword Pool. Spend the late afternoon and evening on Shantang Street — seven li of canal, teahouses and shopfronts — where you can take a boat with live Suzhou balladry (pingtan), or catch a kunqu opera performance at the Shantang opera house (the 600-year-old form is UNESCO-listed and unmistakably Suzhou; pingtan typically runs afternoons, kunqu evenings — check times).

Eat: Shantang and the Guanqian Street area hold the old Suzhou-cuisine names — Deyuelou and Songhelou (the squirrel-shaped mandarin fish is the signature dish at both), Zhu Hongxing for noodles, and the braised-meat counters at Du Sanzhen.

Day 2: The Great Garden, the Museum, and the Water

Humble Administrator’s Garden → Suzhou Museum → Pingjiang Road → Jinji Lake (sunset)

The morning belongs to the Humble Administrator’s Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) — the largest and most celebrated of the classical Suzhou gardens, the model the whole art form measures itself against; do it east-to-west, unhurried. Next door, I.M. Pei’s Suzhou Museum distils the garden aesthetic into modern architecture — book the timed entry ahead at weekends and peak periods. Afternoon on Pingjiang Road, the best-preserved stretch of the old canal city — hand-poled boats, craft shops, teahouses — and finish at the modern Jinji Lake waterfront, best at dusk (the lake’s bridge and, on Friday and Saturday evenings, a musical fountain around 8pm).
