How this route works

Four regions in four days only works because the trains make it work: Hangzhou, Shanghai and Suzhou sit on one high-speed line within an hour of each other, and the water towns fill the gaps by road. The trade-off is pace — this is a taster. Day 1: Hangzhou

West Lake (half day) → Lingyin Temple → Xixi Wetland (if time)

Start on West Lake, the thousand-year benchmark of Chinese scenic beauty — walk a causeway or take a rowing boat among the islands. Then Lingyin Temple, the city’s great Buddhist monastery behind the carved Feilai Feng grottoes (buy the Feilai Feng scenic ticket first, then the temple ticket). Day 2: Nanxun & Wuzhen

Nanxun Ancient Town (half day) → drive ~2h → Wuzhen (evening)

Two canal towns, deliberately different. Nanxun is the road-less-travelled one — a Qing merchant town where returning overseas traders built East-meets-West mansions, quieter and less commercial than its famous neighbour, with woodblock printing and rowboat rides. Then two hours by road to Wuzhen, the region’s most celebrated water town: come for the Xizha (West Scenic Zone) at night, when the canals light up and the crowds thin — which is exactly why you sleep here rather than day-tripping. Day 3: Shanghai

The Bund → City God Temple / Yu Garden → Lujiazui skyline (evening)

Into the metropolis: the Bund’s colonial waterfront (stand on the Puxi/west side, Pudong’s skyline across the river — best at dusk), the old-town City God Temple bazaar and the classical Yu Garden it wraps (“advance reservation; closed Mondays”), and across the water to the Lujiazui towers after dark. Day 4: Suzhou

Hanshan Temple → Humble Administrator’s Garden → Pingjiang Road (evening)

Finish in the garden city, ~30 minutes by rail from Shanghai. Hanshan Temple, immortalised in the Tang poem every Chinese schoolchild knows; the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the largest and most celebrated of the classical Suzhou gardens (and the model for the whole art form); and the canal-side Pingjiang Road old street for the evening — hand-poled boats, teahouses, and pingtan / kunqu opera performances if you time it (the latter is UNESCO-listed and unmistakably Suzhou). The practical layer

• The transport spine: Hangzhou–Shanghai–Suzhou is one high-speed line, trains every few minutes, each hop under an hour (train booking options). Nanxun and Wuzhen need a road connection — a pre-booked driver or the intercity buses; Wuzhen has direct coaches from Hangzhou and Shanghai.
• The honest pace note: four days for four destinations means early starts and no lingering. If that’s not your holiday, cut Suzhou or the water towns and go deeper on the rest — or take the 9-day version.
