Chengdu Day Trips: Leshan, Mount Emei & Water Towns

Chengdu is ringed by some of Sichuan’s biggest sights — the largest stone Buddha on earth, a sacred Buddhist mountain of monkeys and monasteries, a 2,200-year-old irrigation marvel, and old riverside towns — all doable as day trips or a short loop of two to four days.

Day Trip 1

Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Buddhist stone carving

The Leshan Giant Buddha is the headline: a 71-metre Maitreya carved into the cliff at the confluence of three rivers in the 8th century — the largest stone Buddha in the world, his ears alone seven metres long. Two ways to meet him, and ideally both: descend the cliff staircase past the carvings to stand at his feet (long queues in peak season — go early), or take the river boat for the full-figure view he was designed to be seen from. About 2–2.5 hours from Chengdu by high-speed rail to Leshan, then a short hop to the site. Eat afterwards at the Zhang Gong Bridge food street — Leshan is a serious food town, home of bo bo ji cold skewers.

Route Notes
Chengdu is ringed by some of Sichuan’s biggest sights — the largest stone Buddha on earth, a sacred Buddhist mountain of monkeys and monasteries, a 2,200-year-old irrigation marvel, and old riverside towns — all doable as day trips or a short loop of two to four days. This is the "around Chengdu" companion to our city guide. Best months: spring (Mar–Jun) and autumn (Sep–Nov).

How to string them together

  • One day each: Leshan; or Emei; or Dujiangyan+Qingcheng; or Huanglongxi. All are comfortable single days from Chengdu.
  • Two days: Leshan + Emei together (they’re neighbours) is the classic pairing — Buddha one afternoon, mountain the next.
  • Four-to-five days around Chengdu: Huanglongxi → Leshan → Emei → Dujiangyan → back, the full "greater Chengdu" loop, mixing the city guide’s sights with these.

The practical layer

What to book first

Reserve Mount Emei summit transport and accommodation first if staying overnight, then book Leshan timed entry or boat tickets for weekends and public holidays. Ordinary rail seats can follow once the day-trip order is fixed.
