One of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains, and a full day (or an overnight) in its own right. The three draws: the Golden Summit at 3,000m+, with its vast Puxian statue and, on clear mornings, a sea of clouds; the ancient monasteries (Baoguo, Fuhu, Wannian); and the famously bold monkeys, who will relieve you of anything loose — hold your bag. A cable car saves the hardest ascent. Emei town is ~1.5 hours by rail from Chengdu, and it pairs naturally with Leshan (they’re close together) into a two-day Buddhist-Sichuan loop.

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the quiet marvel — 2,200 years old and still watering the Chengdu plain today, the engineering genius clearer with a guide (Fish Mouth, Flying Sand Weir, Bottle-Neck Channel). Nearby Mount Qingcheng, birthplace of Taoism, is a cool, green, temple-laced climb ("the most secluded mountain under heaven"). There’s also a panda base at Dujiangyan, quieter than Chengdu’s. All under an hour from the city by fast train — an easy day, or a relaxed two.

Huanglongxi, an hour south of Chengdu, is the accessible old-town fix — Ming-Qing streets, banyan-shaded canals, teahouses and a long history as a film set ("China’s Hollywood"). A gentle half-day of the "ten ancient" charms — old streets, wharves, trees, temples — and endless snacks.

For the tea-minded, Mengding Shan near Ya’an — one of the birthplaces of cultivated tea in China — offers tea gardens you can pick and process in, a world tea-culture museum, and the theatrical "dragon" long-spouted pouring performances. The nearby Bifengxia gorge adds waterfalls and a panda base. A quieter, greener day than the headline sights, ~2.5 hours west of Chengdu.
