Jiuzhaigou is the one that makes people who’ve seen a thousand lakes go quiet — tiered pools in Tiffany blues and jade greens under snow peaks and Tibetan villages, so distinctive that the Chinese saying runs "after Jiuzhaigou, no other water." Paired with Huanglong’s terraced travertine pools, it’s the headline of northern Sichuan. Best months: April–December, with autumn (October) the legendary season. No Tibet permit needed — this is northern Sichuan.

Practical honesty

• The train changes the route. Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai now takes about two hours, replacing an all-day road transfer for most travellers. Flying remains useful for selected schedules, but arriving by rail is usually easier on a compact itinerary.
• Altitude: Huanglong tops 3,500m and Jiuzhaigou’s upper lakes are high too — hydrate, slow down, and don’t dismiss a bad headache.
• Season and booking: October colour is spectacular and correspondingly mobbed — book park entry and accommodation well ahead. Winter is quiet, icy and beautiful; deep summer is green.
• No Tibet permit: this is Ngawa (Aba) Prefecture in northern Sichuan — Tibetan in culture, freely travelled, no permit or guide required (Sichuan-Tibet Highway guide explains why that distinction matters elsewhere).

Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong: how to transfer

• Do not combine both parks in one sightseeing day. Give Jiuzhaigou a full day, then visit Huanglong on the transfer back toward the railway.
• Use a prebooked car between the parks. Station shuttles run from Huanglongjiuzhai and Songpan to both scenic areas, but a direct car gives the most reliable timing for a same-day Huanglong visit and evening train.
• Keep the last train realistic. Allow time for altitude, cable-car queues, changing road conditions and the final station transfer. If the connection feels tight, stay in Songpan and return to Chengdu the next morning.

The practical layer

• Getting here: take a high-speed train from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai (about two hours), then use a direct visitor shuttle to Jiuzhaigou. Songpan is a useful alternate station; both stations have direct shuttles to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. Check China rail booking and local shuttle schedules for the exact day.
