Deep Zhejiang by Car: Three Self-Drive Loops Beyond the Tourist Trail (2026)

Most visitors see Zhejiang as Hangzhou plus a water town. But the province's interior — the mountains, gorges, terraced villages and old towns of Shaoxing, Quzhou, Lishui, Wenzhou and Taizhou — is some of the most beautiful and least internationally travelled countryside in eastern China. This is a route-planning overview of three self-drive loops for travellers who've done the headline sights and want the deep version. Honest upfront: these are driving itineraries for confident, returning-to-China travellers , not first-timers, and English all but disappears. Best months: September–October.

Most visitors see Zhejiang as Hangzhou plus a water town. But the province’s interior — the mountains, gorges, terraced villages and old towns of Shaoxing, Quzhou, Lishui, Wenzhou and Taizhou — is some of the most beautiful and least internationally travelled countryside in eastern China. This is a route-planning overview of three self-drive loops for travellers who’ve done the headline sights and want the deep version. Honest upfront: these are driving itineraries for confident, returning-to-China travellers, not first-timers, and English all but disappears. Best months: September–October.

Read this first: who these loops are for

These are not city breaks. They involve a hired car or self-drive, multiple one-night stops in small towns, minimal English, and sights that reward scenery-and-village lovers over monument-tickers. If this is your first China trip, do Hangzhou and the Jiangnan water towns instead (Hangzhou 3-day itinerary / Jiangnan 4-day itinerary) and come back for this. If you’ve been before, can navigate in Chinese apps, and want the province almost no foreign visitor sees — read on. All three loop out of Hangzhou.

Loop 1: The Grand Central–South Circuit (about two weeks)

Hangzhou → Shaoxing → Taizhou → Wenzhou → Lishui → Jinhua → back to Hangzhou

The full immersion. Highlights along the way: Shaoxing’s canal-town soul — the Ke Yan scenic area and the “Lu Zhen” recreated from writer Lu Xun’s stories, and the utterly authentic Anchang old town; Tiantai Mountain and Guoqing Temple, cradle of the Tiantai school of Buddhism and a founding site for Japanese Buddhism too; Yandang Mountain in Wenzhou, one of China’s ten great mountains and a Nirvana in Fire filming location; the “sky pillar” rock of Shiweiyan in the Nanxi River valley; Yunhe’s terraced fields, billed as China’s most beautiful; the tea-cycling park and cliff-village of Songyang; the “world’s first peak” karst of Xiandu in Jinyun (a Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils location); and Hengdian, the world’s largest film studio, “China’s Hollywood,” near the end. It’s a fortnight of mountains, terraces, old villages and film sets — the province’s greatest-hits reel for people with time.

Loop 2: Southern Zhejiang’s Mountains and Water (about 5 days)

Hangzhou → Quzhou → Lishui → Wenzhou → Taizhou → Hangzhou

The compressed version, weighted toward the wild south. The mysterious man-made Longyou Caves and the millennium-old border town of Ershiba Du in Quzhou; the “cloud-hidden paradise” waterfalls of Daji and the She ethnic minority cultural area in Jingning; the pristine Wuyanling nature reserve and — the real prize — the Taishun covered bridges (langqiao), the finest surviving timber arch bridges in China, at Sixi; ending back through Tiantai Mountain and Guoqing Temple. Five days of gorges, waterfalls, minority culture and the country’s best old bridges.

Loop 3: The Western Zhejiang Headwaters (about 6 days, crosses into Anhui)

Hangzhou → Quzhou → Kaihua → Huangshan (Anhui) → back to Hangzhou

The one that crosses provincial lines to bag a bucket-list mountain. The Longyou Caves and Ershiba Du again as the Quzhou openers, then Qianjiangyuan — the forested source of the Qiantang River — before crossing into Anhui for the big one: Huangshan (the Yellow Mountains), whose granite peaks, twisted pines and cloud seas are the most painted landscape in China (“the mountain after which you need see no other”). The UNESCO Ming-Qing village of Xidi follows, then back over the border to the “kingdom of giant trees” at West Tianmu Mountain and the lake scenery of Qingshan Lake. Six days pairing Zhejiang’s headwaters with Anhui’s masterpiece mountain.

The practical layer

  • The transport reality: all three loops assume a car — self-drive (an International Driving Permit is not sufficient for driving in mainland China; you’d need a temporary Chinese licence, which is a process) or, far more practically for visitors, a hired car with driver arranged for the multi-day route. Some legs have high-speed rail (Hangzhou–Quzhou, Hangzhou–Huangshan) if you restructure around trains and local transport, but the villages between stations still need wheels.
  • Language: outside Hangzhou this is deep-interior China — download offline translation before you go: China travel essentials.
  • Payments: QR payments reach even remote villages, but carry some cash for the smallest places: Alipay guide.
  • Entry: most Western passports enter visa-free for 30 days — enough for the two-week grand loop, but count your days: China visa-free policy.
  • Not ready for the deep version? Start here: Hangzhou 3-day itinerary / Shanghai + Hangzhou 5-day itinerary / Jiangnan 9-day itinerary
