Wuzhen is the Jiangnan water town that repays the overnight most visitors don’t budget for: the canals, stone bridges and waterside houses of the West Scenic Zone light up after dark, once the day-tripping coaches have gone. This guide covers both halves of the town in a day — and makes the case for staying to see the half that only exists at night. Best months: spring (Mar–May).

The one thing to know: two zones, and why you sleep here

Wuzhen is split into two ticketed areas, and understanding the difference is the whole trip:

• Dongzha (East Scenic Zone) — the compact, workshop-and-museum half. Three hours does it: the indigo-cloth dye works, the old bed museum, woodcarving hall, and the former home of the writer Mao Dun. Doable as a pure day trip.
• Xizha (West Scenic Zone) — the larger, lived-in half, and the reason to stay overnight. Five to seven hours, running into the evening, because Xizha’s canals, bridges and waterside lanes light up at night after the day crowds leave, and that — not the daytime — is the Wuzhen of the photographs.

The standard Chinese advice is blunt and correct: you haven’t really seen Wuzhen unless you’ve stayed a night. Do Dongzha in the morning, Xizha from lunch into the night, and sleep inside Xizha.

A day, done right

Morning — Dongzha: arrive early. The Hongyuantai indigo dye works with its hanging lengths of blue-and-white cloth is the signature photo; the Jiangnan Hundred Beds Museum, the folk-customs hall, the woodcarving mansion and Mao Dun’s former residence fill the morning at an unhurried pace. Free shuttle buses connect Dongzha to Xizha (about 1.5km apart).

Afternoon into night — Xizha: cross over after lunch. The Zhaoming Academy (where a Southern Dynasties crown prince studied), the still-working old post office (post a letter — it’s the town’s most-visited spot for a reason), the White Lotus Pagoda with its Grand Canal view, and the embroidery-shop lane of Nügong Street. As the light goes, take the hand-poled night boat along the West Market canal and find a waterside spot for dinner and a drink. This is the hour the whole trip is built around.

Eating: Xizha’s restaurants and guesthouse kitchens run to fixed scenic-area pricing. Pick a waterside table and settle in. Local names worth trying: the town’s famous stinky tofu (Mao Lao Tai, if the queue’s bearable), the sauce-braised pork (jiang ban ti), and the dingsheng rice cakes.

The practical layer

• Getting here: Wuzhen has no train station or airport — buses are how you arrive. Direct coaches run from Hangzhou (~1.5h), Suzhou (~1.5h) and Shanghai (~2h); or take a train to nearby Tongxiang or Jiaxing and transfer by taxi/bus. Factor this into arrival timing.
• Tickets: Dongzha and Xizha have separate tickets, with a combined option; staying overnight inside Xizha usually includes re-entry — check when you book your guesthouse.
